Type any local service into Google on a phone -- "printer repair", "hotel in Ikeja", "haulage company Port Harcourt" -- and look at what fills the screen before you scroll. It is not websites. It is a map with three businesses pinned to it, each showing a name, a star rating, an opening status and a call button.
That block is the Google Business Profile, and for a great many Nigerian businesses it does more selling than the website ever will. It is also free, which makes it the single most neglected asset in most marketing budgets.
What the listing actually decides
A customer looking at that map block is making a decision with five pieces of information: how close you are, whether you are open, what other people said, what the place looks like, and how easy it is to call. They will usually pick one within seconds, and never see your website at all.
You control four of those five. Distance you cannot change. Everything else is a field you can edit today.
The failures we see most often
Wrong or missing opening hours. This is the most expensive small error in local business. Someone searches at 6pm, your listing says closed, and they call the next result. You never learn it happened. Worse is the reverse -- your listing says open, they travel, you are closed, and now you have an annoyed customer writing the review that sits under your name for years. Set your real hours, and set the public holiday exceptions.
The wrong primary category. Google uses this more heavily than most people realise when deciding which searches you appear in. A business listed as "Shop" when it is specifically a "Building materials supplier" is competing in the wrong race. Pick the most specific category that genuinely describes the main thing you do, then add the secondary ones.
No photographs, or only a logo. People want to see the actual place -- the shopfront, the inside, the vehicles, the staff, the work. A listing with real photographs looks like a real business. A listing with one blurry logo looks like it might not exist any more. Ten honest phone photographs beat one expensive render.
Reviews left unanswered. Reply to all of them, including the bad ones, especially the bad ones. A calm, specific, non-defensive reply to a complaint is read by every future customer who scrolls past, and it tells them more about how you handle problems than any amount of marketing copy. Never argue. Never blame the customer.
No description, or a description full of adjectives. Write what you do, who you do it for, and where. Plainly. "We supply and install industrial generators for factories and hotels across Lagos and Ogun State" does more work than a paragraph about passion and excellence.
Getting reviews without being awkward
Most businesses ask badly or not at all. Two things make it easier.
Ask at the moment the customer is visibly happy -- when the job is finished and they have just said thank you -- not a week later by text. And make it one tap: get the short review link from your profile and send exactly that, with a single sentence. Anything that requires the customer to search for you will not happen.
Do not buy reviews. Beyond the obvious, they arrive in clusters from accounts with no history and they read like nothing a real customer would write. Genuine reviews accumulate slowly and unevenly, which is exactly what makes them convincing.
What to do this week
Claim the listing if you have not. Set the real hours. Choose the most specific primary category. Upload ten honest photographs. Reply to every review sitting there unanswered. Write two plain sentences about what you do.
That is an afternoon of work, it costs nothing, and for a business that currently has no listing or a neglected one, it will do more than the first month of most paid campaigns.
When you would want help
If you have several branches, if you are in a competitive category where the top three are well organised, or if your listing has been suspended or duplicated, it gets fiddly and it is worth having someone who has untangled it before.
But if you are a single location with a neglected profile, do the list above yourself first. Spending money on marketing before your free listing is correct is spending money to send people to a closed door.
